What Causes Gaps?
Gaps are any significant space between two teeth. For some individuals, they are small and not an issue. With other patients, the gaps are larger and more noticeable. While gaps usually are not detrimental to your health, they can leave some self-conscious about their smiles.
Some of the most common causes of gaps include:
- Extra gum tissue that extends down too far
- Mismatch between the size of your teeth and jawbone
- Tongue thrusting where the tongue presses against teeth, causing a space to develop
- Childhood thumb sucking
Who is a Good Candidate?
During a consultation, the dentists at our Boston, MA, office will evaluate your smile to determine if veneers are the right fit for you. If you have small gaps between your teeth and your teeth and gums are healthy, veneers may be the right option.
Our doctors do not recommend veneers for patients with large gaps, cavities, or poor oral health. We also do not advise veneers for patients who have substantial existing restorations.
What Is the Procedure?
Once the dentist approves you for veneers, they will remove a small portion of the enamel from the surface of your teeth to make room for the restorations. When the enamel is removed, the dentist will then take an impression of your teeth. We send the impressions to the lab where the veneers are made to fit your teeth accurately. The veneers are made out of durable materials like feldspathic porcelain or e.max glass ceramic.
While the lab makes your permanent veneers, we will place temporary veneers to cover gaps. During a second appointment at our Boston, MA, office, we will bond the veneers to your teeth with a strong dental cement. We will ensure that the veneers look natural and fit securely on your teeth for a seamless look.
What Can I Expect after Treatment?
Veneers instantly change the look of your teeth and smile. Since veneers are so thin, you cannot detect them on your teeth. The natural-looking porcelain is translucent and reflects light.
How Do I Care for My Veneers?
Your dentist will provide you with specific instructions on how to care for your veneers in our Boston, MA, office. While veneers are durable and highly effective at resisting stains, you should still care for them as you would your normal teeth by brushing and flossing daily. You should continue to visit your dentist regularly. If you notice any chipping, shifting, or staining, you should contact your dentist.
