Before and after crown placement

Traditional Dental Crown Procedure

Here is what to expect when you are treated with a traditional porcelain crown at our Boston, MA, dental practice...
"our restorative dentistry team possesses nearly 30 years of experience in the design and placement of dental crowns."

Day of Procedure

"our restorative dentistry team possesses nearly 30 years of experience in the design and placement of dental crowns."

Preparation

We treat your affected tooth (or teeth) with any preparatory procedures such as a root canal, to eliminate decay and bacterial infection. We then modify the tooth by shaving down a layer of surface enamel to allow room for the restoration.

Dental Impressions

The dentist takes an impression of your mouth, allowing us to custom design your restoration to fit comfortably yet snugly between existing teeth.

Temporary Crown

The dentist places a temporary crown on your tooth while the design for your permanent crown is sent to our lab for manufacturing.

Construction

Our world-class dental lab crafts your restoration from porcelain or other material of choice. The on-site location allows for less turnaround time and more convenient treatment for our patients.

Placement

Once the permanent crown is finished, you will return to the office to have it placed. The dentist checks the fit and then secures with dental cement for optimal functionality and longevity.

Same-Day Crown Treatment

With innovations in modern dentistry, the dentist can now treat a patient's affected tooth and install a dental crown in a single appointment. The CEREC® same-day crown system uses advanced digital imaging software to take precise scans of the mouth and unload immediately to our chairside monitor for crown design.

The dentist plans a custom fitting restoration and sends the design to an in-office milling machine for quick and convenient crown construction. The CEREC system can produce the final restoration in under an hour, eliminating the need for temporary crowns and multiple office visits.

Are You a Good Candidate for a Dental Crown?

Dental crowns are a suitable option to address a range of dental concerns. During a consultation with one of our certified prosthodontists, you can learn more about whether you qualify. The best candidates for treatment have...

Good Overall Health

Candidates for dental crowns should have good overall health. Besides the tooth intended for the crown treatment, you should have a healthy smile free of periodontal disease. If you suffer from any other dental condition, we can provide additional treatment.

Sufficient Enamel

You will need a certain amount of healthy tooth enamel to support a crown. Since the crown encapsulates the entire tooth it must provide a strong foundation for the restoration. If you do not have adequate enamel, we may recommend extracting the tooth and placing dental implants.

No Bruxism

Patients that suffer from bruxism, or the grinding of the teeth, might not be ideal crown candidates. Bruxism can erode a crown, making treatment ineffective. If you grind your teeth we might suggest treating the condition before placing a crown
