Although in a perfect world, you’d have plenty of time to give your body the rest it deserves, sometimes things like travel are unavoidable. However, if you’ve recently had a tooth extracted, hopping on a flight can be a very painful experience. Here’s why if you need to hit the road following this procedure, it’s best to recuperate for as long as you can!
The Dangers of Flying After Tooth Extractions
According to data, airplane travel is still the safest method of long-distance transit today. However, that doesn’t mean it’s recommended after having your tooth pulled. That’s because the changes in pressure your body will experience as the plane elevates can increase the pain in your extraction site and can even cause a dangerous condition known as dry socket.
Preventing Dry Socket
Dry socket occurs when the clot in your extraction site prematurely falls out. When this happens, your jawbone can become exposed, often leading to a painful infection. Should this occur, be sure to contact your dentist as soon as possible for an emergency appointment. However, if you’re on a plane or out of town, this can be difficult.
Thankfully, it is possible to prevent dry socket. Be sure to follow your dentist’s after-care instructions closely, and avoid touching the clot with your tongue, fingers, or toothbrush. Furthermore, it is important to not drink from straws or spit forcefully while your mouth heals, as these can also dislodge the clot.
Tips for Flying
Should you find yourself in a situation where taking a flight is unavoidable following your tooth extraction, try to wait at least 48 hours. You should also avoid strenuous physical activity during this time and get as much rest as you can to help speed up the healing process.
Remember, while some emergencies are unavoidable, if you need to travel by air, try to wait at least 48 hours after your tooth extraction, or if possible, reschedule your procedure for when you return.
