What Is a Prosthodontist?

Prosthodontists specialize in restoring damaged and missing teeth as well as treating jaw disorders, like TMJD. Unlike general dentists, after they complete dental school, they go on to finish specialty prosthodontic education and a 3-year residency program. This additional training and education provide them with important technical skills and knowledge in focused areas of their field, including oral and maxillofacial surgery, dental laboratory procedures, implant prosthodontics, and much more.

At our practice in particular, all of our prosthodontists are board certified by the American Board of Prosthodontics. To earn this distinguishment, they’re required to pass rigorous oral and written examinations that demonstrate their expertise in their specialty. Additionally, Dr. Margvelashvili-Malament and Dr. Kenneth Malament are both associate professors at Tufts who have helped generations of new dentists develop the same advanced skills and even become prosthodontists themselves.

Our prosthodontists are active in the clinical research world as well, having published hundreds of peer-reviewed studies with important findings that are incorporated directly into our practice. This includes Dr. Kenneth Malament’s extensive research on ceramic restorations’ long-term clinical performance and Dr. Mariano’s lectures and techniques on digital implant planning and placement.

If that wasn’t enough, Dr. Weber is Professor Emeritus at both Tufts and Harvard and considered a true living legend in the world of dental implant dentistry — he helped develop the field alongside companies like Straumann! Working collaboratively, Dr. Weber and Dr. Margvelashvili-Malament published a chapter about guided implant surgery in the most recent digital dentistry textbook.

All in all, patients can rest easy knowing that their smiles are in the best hands imaginable at Boston Prosthodontics Dental Group.
