What Are Dental Veneers?

Simply put, veneers are thin ceramic shells that can be placed on top of the teeth. They are able to conceal a variety of aesthetic imperfections by changing the apparent size, shape, color, and alignment of your teeth, allowing you to completely change how your smile looks to others.

Our veneers are made from an incredibly high-quality ceramic, providing them with a level of durability and realism that can be difficult to achieve with any other cosmetic treatment.

The Process of Getting Veneers

As with any aesthetic treatment, we will begin by bringing you in for a consultation. We will talk with you about what you’re looking for and how veneers could potentially help you.

Once we’ve settled on a treatment plan for you, we’ll take sophisticated digital impression of your teeth, and will use this information to design what your veneers are going to look like. You will work with your doctor and our ceramist during this process to make sure that you’re satisfied with your eventual results.

In order to make room for the veneers, a small portion of your enamel will need to be removed. After trimming this away, we’ll cover your teeth with a set of temporary veneers while we craft your permanent restoration in our in-house dental lab. Once these are done, we’ll bring you in to finally put your cosmetics into place.

Benefits of Veneers

We’ve touched on some of the factors that separate veneers from other cosmetic treatments already. For one, they’re capable of addressing a wide variety of aesthetic issues all at once, and over an incredibly short time frame. However, their merits don’t end here.

The veneers themselves are made from high-quality ceramics, making them resistant to stains. They’re also remarkably durable, regularly lasting around 15 years before needing to be replaced. Finally, the ceramic we use imparts remarkable realism—nobody will know you’ve had dental work done unless you decide to tell them.

If you are interested in experiencing all that veneers can offer firsthand, or if you just want to learn more, feel free to schedule a consultation with us. We’d love to talk to you about how this cosmetic treatment could change your life for the better.

Understanding the Cost of Veneers

Veneers are an excellent way to achieve pristine pearly whites that are free of flaws and make you feel confident. However, they are an investment in the future of your smile. During your consultation with us, we will discuss the cost of your treatment in detail as well as your financing options so that you don’t run into any surprises. Until then, here are some things that you should take into consideration.

Factors That Affect Cost of Veneers

There are multiple factors that contribute to the cost of veneers. Here are the most prominent ones:

  • Number of Veneers: Depending on your cosmetic goals, you may need one or several dental veneers.
  • Materials Used: Veneers can be made from various materials. Our veneers at Boston Prosthodontics Dental Group are made from high-quality ceramics by our in-house master ceramist.
  • Preliminary Treatments: If you have existing oral health issues, like tooth decay or gum disease, they will need to be treated and eliminated before you can get veneers. These will incur their own costs.

Will Dental Insurance Cover the Cost of Veneers?

Dental insurance form

Veneers are usually considered to be an elective, cosmetic procedure, so they are not typically covered by dental insurance. However, there are some exceptions. If a veneer is being placed to protect and build up a damaged tooth, it may receive partial coverage. If you have any questions regarding your plan and what it covers, don’t hesitate to talk to one of our friendly team members.

Veneers FAQs

Do you have other questions about veneers in Boston that aren’t discussed here? Feel free to reach out to our team for clarification and to schedule your consultation.

How Much Enamel Needs to Be Removed for Veneers?

We will take off about 0.5mm of enamel from the front surface of the teeth receiving veneers. Without this extra space, your veneers would protrude and look less natural. Before we remove the thin layer of enamel, we will numb this area of your mouth, so you shouldn’t feel any pain during this part of the process. Obviously, this entails making a permanent change to your teeth, but when they see the results, most patients are thrilled and feel it’s well worthwhile.

Do Veneers Require Special Care?

No, veneers need the same care as your natural teeth. Daily brushing and flossing should keep plaque from building up and decaying teeth that veneers are attached to, and routine preventive dental care (e.g., dental checkups and cleanings) allows us to keep an eye on your veneers. If we notice any signs of excessive wear and tear, we can replace your veneers and always keep your smile in brilliant, excellent condition.

How Can I Make My Veneers Last as Long as Possible?

As long as you perform regular oral hygiene and continue to visit our team, your veneers should last about 15 years before needing replacement. Although veneers don’t require any extra special maintenance, there are some choices you can make to possibly extend their lifespan. For instance, to slow down staining even more, you can limit eating and drinking deeply pigmented substances, such as coffee, tea, wine, soy sauce, tomato sauce, and more. You can also cut back on the sugar you consume, which can help your teeth stay strong and cavity free.

How Long Is the Veneers Process?

In total, getting veneers usually takes two appointments with a couple of weeks in between. This time gives our ceramist time to craft your veneers to your unique mouth. If you have a special event coming up and want to have your veneers ready and in place by then, make sure you give plenty of room in your schedule for treatment. Discuss your goals and timeline with us, and we will do everything we can to empower your smile for your event.

Are Veneers Permanent?

Though veneers are not technically permanent since you will eventually need to replace them, they are considered irreversible. To ensure that your veneers fit properly to your teeth, your dentist will need to remove a small amount of enamel from each tooth. Removed enamel will not grow back, and thus teeth that have been prepared this way will always need to be covered by crowns or veneers.

What Happens to the Teeth Under Veneers?

Veneers themselves will not harm your teeth, and only a minimal amount of enamel will be removed during treatment. The bonding material used to hold your veneers in place is also completely safe.

Because your enamel is covered by your veneers, this procedure will not increase your risk of cavities, but you will still need to brush and floss your teeth regularly to prevent tooth decay from occurring underneath your veneers.

Your veneers require no special care other than brushing with a non-abrasive toothpaste and soft-bristled toothbrush. Otherwise, be sure to continue flossing and visiting your dentist twice a year as usual, and your teeth will stay healthy and strong with the addition of your new veneers.

Is There Anything I Can’t Eat with Veneers?

When your temporary veneers are first placed, you should avoid hard foods like ice, raw fruits and vegetables, and hard candy. Also, steer clear of sticky foods that could pull them off your teeth.

Your temporary veneers also stain easily, so be careful with darkly pigmented foods and beverages like coffee and red wine.

Once your permanent veneers are placed, you can enjoy a full diet but avoid extremely hard and crunchy foods and dark beverages when possible.

If you are experiencing any tooth sensitivity following placement, don’t eat anything hot or cold. Sensitivity should clear up shortly after you get your permanent veneers.

Be sure to drink alcohol sparingly, as it can weaken the bonding material that holds your veneers to your teeth.

Can You Whiten Veneers?

Unfortunately, whitening treatments have no effect on veneers, even if they’ve been stained.  To change their color, you will need to have them either shaded or replaced.

Be aware that whitening treatment can still affect your teeth around your veneers and could cause your smile to look uneven. Thus, if you’re planning to have both professional whitening and veneers done, it is best to whiten your teeth first so you can match your veneers to the rest of your smile.
