Even a high-quality dental bridge can end up falling off your teeth for various reasons. While this may not seem like an emergency on the surface, it’s definitely an issue you will want to address as quickly as possible so that you can continue to enjoy the benefits of a complete smile. Since it pays to be prepared for the worst-case scenario, here’s a look at why dental bridges sometimes fall out and what you should do about this situation.

Why Do Dental Bridges Sometimes Fall Out?

A dental bridge is a type of dental prosthesis that can be used to replace a single tooth or multiple teeth in a row. Traditionally, it is attached to the teeth on either side of the gap that needs to be filled. If a dental bridge falls out, it may be for any of the following reasons:

  • Age: Sometimes a lost dental bridge is simply a result of the passage of time. The cement keeping the prosthesis anchored in place can gradually weaken due to wear and tear.
  • Untreated Decay: The teeth supporting your dental bridge are just as susceptible to cavities as the rest of your smile. If the decay goes untreated for too long, it can weaken the teeth, causing the bridge to fail.
  • Bite Problems: If there’s a problem with your bite, it could end up putting too much pressure on your dental bridge. This can cause it to fall off or even break.
  • Physical Trauma: Getting hit in the face or mouth could damage your dental bridge and potentially dislodge it.

What to Do If a Dental Bridge Falls Out

In the event that your dental bridge has fallen out of your mouth, you should remain calm and follow these simple steps:

  • Call your prosthodontist right away to let them know what happened. They’ll make room in their schedule to see you as soon as possible.
  • Keep the bridge (along with any pieces that have broken off) in a safe place. You will want to bring the prosthesis with you to the prosthodontist’s office.
  • If possible, try to put the bridge back in place. Don’t try to force it if it doesn’t seem to fit.

When the time comes for your appointment, your prosthodontist will take a look at your bridge. If it seems to be in good condition overall, they may try to reattach it to your teeth. But if it is too badly damaged to be used anymore, it will need to be replaced.

There’s no need to panic if a dental bridge falls out. As long as you follow the right steps, you can have the problem fixed quickly and protect the overall health and function of your smile.
