Improving the appearance of the Teeth, Mouth, and Smile

Cosmetic Dentistry is a branch of dentistry that focuses on improving the appearance of the teeth, mouth, and smile.

It involves a range of procedures that can be used to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the teeth and improve the overall appearance of the mouth.

Some common procedures that fall under the umbrella of cosmetic dentistry include teeth whitening, veneers, dental crowns and orthodontics. These procedures can be used to address a wide range of cosmetic issues, such as discolored or stained teeth, uneven or crooked teeth, and gaps between the teeth.

Why do people choose cosmetic dentistry?

There are many reasons why people choose to undergo cosmetic dental procedures. Some common motivations include:

  • Improving the appearance of the teeth: Many people choose cosmetic dentistry to enhance the appearance of their teeth, which can be stained, discolored, or uneven.
  • Boosting self-confidence: A beautiful smile can have a positive impact on a person’s self-confidence and self-esteem.
  • Fixing functional problems: Some cosmetic procedures, such as crowns or orthodontics or a combination of the two, can help to correct functional issues with the teeth, such as misalignment or malocclusion.
  • Aging concerns: As people age, their teeth may become discolored or chipped, and cosmetic procedures can help not only to restore their appearance but also function.
  • Career advancement: Some people may choose cosmetic dentistry to improve their appearance for career advancement or personal reasons.

It is important to note that while cosmetic dentistry can provide many benefits, it is not medically necessary and is typically elective. It is important for individuals to carefully consider their motivations and expectations before undergoing any cosmetic dental procedure.

Tell me more about dental veneers

Dental veneers are thin shells that are made of high strength and highly esthetic dental ceramic or porcelain and are used to cover the front surface of the teeth. They are commonly used in cosmetic dentistry to improve the appearance of the teeth and smile. Veneers are considered to be minimally invasive as they do not require extensive removal of natural tooth structure.

Veneers are typically used to address a range of cosmetic issues, including:

  • Discolored or stained teeth
  • Chipped or broken teeth
  • Crooked or misshapen teeth
  • Gaps between the teeth
  • Worn down teeth

The process of getting veneers usually involves several visits to the dentist. During the first visit, the dentist will assess the patient’s oral health and discuss their goals for treatment. If the patient is a good candidate for veneers, the dentist will take impressions of the teeth and pass them to our in-house dental laboratory, where the design for the veneers will be custom-made.

Once the design of the veneers has been finalized you arrive for your second visit. This visit involves minimally preparing the teeth to allow for space and layer of the final veneers. An impression is made of your teeth which is then passed to our in house dental laboratory where your veneers will be hand made by our master ceramist. At the end of this visit you will leave with temporary restorations.

The final visit involves bonded the final veneers to your teeth using an advanced bonding protocol. You leave this visit with your new veneers and improved smile.

Veneers are typically made of either porcelain or other high strength and highly esthetic dental ceramic. Porcelain veneers are more durable more esthetic and completely stain-resistant. Composite veneers or dental bonding is made of weak dental plastic which stains easily and is not as strong or long lasting as ceramic. Additionally, composite is prone to microleakage possibly damaging your natural tooth underneath.

It is important to note that veneers are not a suitable treatment option for everyone. It is important to consult with a qualified dental professional to determine whether veneers are right for you.
